In the winter you need to make sure rabbits are protected from the cold, small breed rabbits or those with short fine coats (I.e rex) should be moved into a shed or garage to protect from the cold.
Rabbits left outside over the winter should have their hutch moved to a location that protects from the wind and rain (ideally nearer the house for shelter and warmth) and a cover created, you can use plastic sheeting from scaffolding or the aluminium camping blankets, don’t use blankets or fleece as they get wet and then freeze, having the reverse effect.
Ensure your rabbits have extra bedding material, and if it gets colder add a cardboard box stuffed with straw into their sleeping compartment for added warmth.
You can also mix up warm porridge (using water or goats milk, rabbits are intolerant to cows milk) allow to cool slightly and then offer to bunnies in the winter.
Another apology for lack of posts.... I feel my blog is becoming full of them, I've had a very hectic summer and life is not likely to settle down any time soon, however i'm hoping to keep on top of my blog as its going to be easier to update than the website (which is currently down, but i'm hoping to get a new version up before chrsitmas... new blog layout might give you an idea of what it'll be like).
Well first of all some news about my life, things are up in the air as i'm hoping to move out of my parents place and into my own home sometime in the new year, so theres some major financial worries bothering me at the moment. I'm also expecting a baby next easter so time worries as well. As a result I've made the decision to drastically downscale my rabbitry and breeding programs (all those new breeds I recently took on have gone).
As from now (although i'm not planning on any litters until after my own new arrival) i'll be working almost exclusively with my smoke pearls, with the odd dash of sable, squirrel and Californian thrown in to improve certain features. I'm also keeping one of my new projects on the side line to give me something to entertain myself, trying to develop the varieties I love in a miniature version. The rabbits staying with me are as follows:
Minerva - marten smoke pearl adult doe
Pandora - marten slate adult doe
Edelweiss - white young adult doe
Atlantis & Avalon - two of this years promising young does (just so I have something to show should I find the time)
Blackberry - Californian adult doe
Zyanya - sable adult doe
Misty - squirrel satin adult doe
Star - seal point mini fur doe
Thor - marten smoke pearl adult buck
Achilles - white adult buck
Jovi - red mini satin neutered buck
Heathcliff - my gorgeous black dwarf lop boy
In addition to those rabbits I also have 2 chinchillas, ginger the chicken, 3 hamsters and both dogs remaining with me.
And I've been very sneaky and managed to hang onto a handful of my mini lops and arranged for them to live with a friend on long term breeding loan until next year. (Princess the standard rex is also out on breeding loan which due to my cut backs has been extended.)
